Your options
- CROUS residences: the cheapest option, but places are limited and given first to students with the greatest needs.
- Private student residences: furnished, secure, services included. Often €700 to €1,200 a month in Paris.
- A studio in a private building: often €700 to €1,100 a month in Paris, and less in the nearby suburbs (Île-de-France).
- Flatshare (colocation): a room in a shared flat, often €550 to €900 a month.
- Host family: a room in a family home, a soft landing for the first months.

What landlords ask for
- Passport and your admission letter or student card.
- A guarantor: a parent with their documents, or Visale, a free guarantee from the French state for students.
- A deposit: at most 1 month of rent for an unfurnished flat, 2 months for a furnished one.
- The first month of rent, and home insurance, which is mandatory.
Help with your rent
Once you live legally in France, you can apply to the CAF for housing aid (APL). It can pay part of your rent every month, depending on the rent and your income.
Avoid scams
- Never pay before seeing the flat (in person or by live video) and signing a contract.
- Be careful with prices far below the market or landlords who are “abroad”.
- Prefer known agencies and residences.
When to look
Start 2 to 3 months before your arrival. The busiest period in Paris is from June to September, so the earlier, the better.
